Hazrat Hurr(a.s)

Hazrat Hurr(a.s)

In the vastness of the planets and celestial inhabitations, some lofty spirits, who were the best of creatures and who had been created by Allah the Almighty as the essence of the aim of the universe and were the means for Divine recognition, were busy in the glorification, adoration and veneration of their Lord. Thus, when the infallible Imam (a.s.) was asked about his (a.s.) creation, he (a.s.) replied,
"We were created before the creation of the angels. We were watching the creation of other celestial creatures from the silence of non-existence, when none existed except us."
When this earth, with all its adornments, had opened up its lap to receive the inhabitations of the children of Adam (a.s.), its relations were bonded with the infallible Imams (a.s.) to prepare and train the powers of mankind's seeing and hearing.
In the creation of mankind, the Creator has instilled an element that keeps jolting its wisdom and understanding time and again and keeps drawing his attention towards his Lord. Humanity deliberated on the evident principles and gained the ability to distinguish between good and evil; to take an account of his profit and loss, he used all the beautiful efforts available at his disposal.
When the talk arose of profit and loss, there were differences and disagreements between the good and the evil; armies were lined up; spears were shining on the kingdoms of emperors from the battlefields; swords were sharpened and the infantry and the cavalry were arranged. The tents of peace and contentment were uprooted from the earth, now divided into countries and emirates. When the foundations of emperors' palaces developed any weakness, they were strengthened with the blood of the weak and the helpless; the downtrodden and demoralized were thrown into barren, infertile and unproductive lands. It seemed as if a storm of the oppressed had erupted before the oppressors and the tyrants. An unknown, harsh, offensive, scary, stinging, terrifying and frightening cry exposed a secret of the planets that this shriek was that of the Satan, the erstwhile member of the celestial world. On hearing this cry, innocent children hurried into their mothers' laps. Oppressed women gave up their lives in order to protect their chastity and modesty. The bones of the youth were crushed in the mills of tyranny and cruelty.
When Satan initiated his vices and the forces of oppression of cruel tyrants like Namrood, Firaon, Haamaan and their clones raised their ugly heads, Allah - the High and the Mighty - sent His emissaries, Prophet Ibraheem (a.s.) and Prophet Moosa (a.s.) with the message of humanity and revealed unto them His laws through His proximate angels. The residents of the celestial world became the anchor of the earth's ship, thereby shoring it to safety from the tumultuous waves of the ocean of tyranny and oppression. Then followed the series of divine Prophets (a.s.) and Messengers (a.s.) to calm the earth. But would the negligent man, intoxicated with the power of rebellion, heed anybody's advice? Autocrats bearing the nature of Firaon, Namrood and Qaaroon were born in every era with new proportions of despotism and repression. Bribery became the order of the day and the deep but filthy nets of conspiracies spread far and wide. It appeared as if this was the only enjoyment of life, the very aim of existence. All permissible and prohibited traits like truth, nobility, sympathy, friendship, humanity, amity, selflessness, sacrifice, etc., were stitched and worn under this system, as per the political demands and considerations. As a result, threads of ostentation appeared all around. But Allah the High had promised that the more the people of the Book would try to conceal its realities, the more He would unveil them, guide them with His open signs and grant contentment to their hearts. No matter in what disguise these political and evil Machiavellians appear, they will fail to hide their tarred faces; the greater the power, the longer will be their period of chastisement and talks of disgrace and degradation will be commonplace. Thus, Allah the High will bring out His virtuous servants from the darkness of deviation to the light of guidance.
From Rome to Persia, the reigns of the so-called Muslim governments of the Syrians and the Arabs were such that they made the tyrannies and cruelties of Firaon and Namrood appear like minor, non-cognizable offences. The slyness, deceits, conspiracies and licentiousness of Moaviyah, the Emir of Syria, had fallen to such pits that the evils of the past seemed like trivial misdeeds. Labeling all vices as Islamic, the accursed Satan had decorated them in the palaces of every Muslim ruler and chief. A storm was about to erupt in the sea of blood, when the grandson of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (a.s.) prevented it through his peace treaty with the spiteful Emir. After the death of Moaviyah, his son Yazid indulged in such dirty play that will reveal the writing of a bloody Syria on every coming era till the Day of Judgment. Every coming morn will appear wearing its shroud, as if each ray of the sun is penetrating the heart of justice with the despots' spear of tyranny.
It was the first day of the first month of the year 61 A.H. The first morning dawned, screaming and calling out to the holy souls that had descended from the habitat of the celestial world. It was calling out to Adam, the chosen one of Allah, for help; beseeching Nuh (a.s.) to provide the parts of the Ark; imploring Ibraheem (a.s.) to exercise patience, supplicate and plead with Allah; to provide the awe of Moosa, the addressee of Allah's speech; requesting Eesa (a.s.) to spread out his prayer-mat on the Divine Throne; the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), the beloved of Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) is about to reach the barren and infertile land of Nainava (the other name for Karbala) and in the process, ripping apart Hurr's army. In a short span of ten days, a war between truth and falsehood will take place; in which, the small but extremely loyal army of Imam Husain (a.s.) will clash with the huge multitude of Kufans and Syrians. The past Prophets (a.s.) will be in a state of confusion and perplexity and invoke the Almighty, 'O Lord! Grant a clear victory to our heir!'
When the morning of Aashura dawned, the chapter of the biggest victory in history was opened. Hurr placed the standard of freedom on his shoulders and ordered that his hands be tied behind his back and he be blindfolded. His son, brother and slave accompanied him. Despite being among the earthly creatures, the embodiment of repentance, Hurr, managed to stir amazement in the celestial inhabitants. His feat was so enormous that till date the handkerchief of the Lady of Paradise, Hazrat Zahra (s.a.), is adorning the his forehead. The fact is that Hurr salvaged the pride of all of us, the monotheist inhabitants of the earth.
Come! Let's all try to comprehend the magnitude of Hurr's act and deliberate over his value and worth. Let us cast a glance at the vastness of Hurr's conscience. Let us examine the attributes of courage, bravery and willpower in our own selves and analyze our level of repentance in the mirror of Hurr's historical sacrifice. Let us measure our acts on his scale and then we lovers of Imam Husain (a.s.) can exclaim, "We earthly creatures also have value and are loved by Allah the Almighty."

Martyrdom of Imam Zayn al-Abidin

Martyrdom of Imam Zayn al-Abidin(A.S.)

Ima`m Zayn al-'Abidin, peace be on him, became old and weak. This is because he exhausted himself by hard worship and obedience to Allah. The historians unanimously agreed that the Ima`m passed most his lifetime fasting by day and standing in prayer by night. Meanwhile, he remembered the tragedy of Karbala`'. When he looked at his aunts and his sisters, he remembered their escape from one tent to another, and the caller of the people called out: "Burn the houses of the wrongdoers!" These memories saddened him very much and affected his body.

The Ima`m is given Poisoned
Ima`m Zayn al-'Abidin enjoyed great popularity. The people spoke with admiration about his knowledge, his jurisprudence, and his acts of worship. The assemblies admired his patience and all his other qualities. The Ima`m occupied the hearts and feelings of the people. Hence blessed was he who saw him, met him, and listened to his words.
This situation frightened the Umayyads, especially as it concerns al-Walid b. 'Abd al-Malik, who was the most spiteful toward the Ima`m.
Al-Zuhri reported on the authority of al-Walid b. 'Abd al-Malik, who said: "I cannot have a rest as long as 'Ali b. al-Husayn is in this world!(Haya`t al-Ima`m Mohammed al-Ba`qir, vol. 1, p. 51).
When al-Walid became king, he decided to assassinate the Ima`m. He sent poison to his governor of Medina, and ordered him to mix the poison (with liquid) and give it to the Ima`m to drink.(Al-Itha`f bi Hub al-Ashra`f, p. 52. Al-Sawa`'iq al-Muhriqa, p. 53).
The poison reacted on the Ima`m's body, and he suffered severe pain. The Ima`m remained on the bed of illness for some days. He complained to Allah of this and asked Him for forgiveness and good pleasure. The people crowded to visit him, and he, peace be on him, praised and lauded Allah for providing him with martyrdom at the hand of the most wicked creature.

His Designation of al-Baqir for the Imamate
Ima`m Zayn al-'Abidin, peace be on him, entrusted the Ima`mate to his son al-Ba`qir, peace be on him, who was the pioneer of the cultural, scientific movement in Islam.
Al-Zuhri said: "I visited 'Ali b. al-Husayn and asked him: If Allah's inevitable command comes, whom shall we follow after you?"
The Ima`m gently looked at him and replied: "(Follow) this son of mine (pointing to his son Mohammed al-Ba`qir), for he is my testamentary trustee, my inheritor, the box of my knowledge, the origin of knowledge, and the one who will split knowledge open."
"Why have you not appointed your most obedient son as your testamentary trustee?" asked al-Zuhri.
Al-Zuhri did not understand the affair of the Ima`mate. He thought that it was based on the tribal customs.
"O Aba` 'Abd Allah, the Ima`mate is not based on oldness and youngness. In this manner, Allah' Apostle, may Allah bless him and his family, entrusted (the Ima`mate) to us, and in this manner we have found it in the tablet (lawh) and the parchment (sahifa)," answered the Ima`m.
Demanding more information, al-Zuhri asked: "O Son of Allah's Apostle, did your Prophet appoint you as testamentary trustees after him?"
"We have found twelve names in the parchment and the tablet.
Their Ima`mate, the names of their fathers, and of their mothers have been written in the tablet," replied the Ima`m, "and seven testamentary trustees will come out of the loins of my son Mohammed. Al-Mahdi will be one of them."
(Al-Khazza`z, Kifa`yat al-Athar. Ithba`t al-Huda`t, vol. 5, p. 264).
Some Shi'ites visited the Ima`m, and he nominated his son Mohammed al-Ba`qir before them, and ordered them to follow him. Then he gave him a document and a box in which were the inheritances of the prophets, the weapon and books of Allah's Apostle, may Allah bless him and his family.
(Basa`'ir al-Daraja`t, p. 146. Ithba`t al-Huda`t, vol. 5, p. 268).

His Commandments to his Son al-Ba`qir
Ima`m Zayn al-'Abidin, peace be on him, entrusted his commandments to his son Ima`m Mohammed al-Ba`qir, peace be on him. The following is some of his commandments to him:
1. He commanded him (to take care of ) his she-camel. He said to him: "I performed the hajj on this she-camel of mine twenty times, yet I did not whip it. When it dies, bury it. Let not the beasts eat its meat, for Allah's Messengers, may Allah bless him and his family, said: 'If a camel stops seven times at 'Arafa, Allah will place it among the favors of the Garden, and bless its offspring.(Al-Barqi, Maha`sin, vol. 2, p. 635).
Ima`m al-Ba`qir carried out these commandments of his father.
2. The Ima`m gave to his son this commandment, which displays the brilliant sides of the qualities of the members of the House (ahl al-Bayt) , peace be on them. He said to him: "O my little son, I will command you with what my father commanded me when death was close to him. He said to me: 'O my little son, beware of wronging him who finds no helper against you except Allah.(Al-Ama`li, p. 161. Al-Khisa`l, p. 185).
3. He commanded him to wash and shroud him and to undertake all his other affairs until he buried him in his final resting place.

To the Shelter Garden
The state of the Ima`m became worse. His illness became intense. The Ima`m suffered exhausting pain, for the poison reacted on all the parts of his body. He told his family that he would move to Paradise at night. He fainted three times. When he came to consciousness, he recited Surat al-Fa`tiha, and Surat Inna` Fatahna`. Then he, peace be on him, said: "Praise belongs to Allah, Who has made good to us His promise and made us inherit the land; we may abide in the garden where we please; so goodly is the reward of the workers.
Then the Ima`m's great soul went to its Creator, as the souls of the prophets and the messengers did. Allah's angels, favors and greetings surrounded it with magnification and admiration.
This great soul met its Creator after it had illuminated the horizons of this world with knowledge, worship, and freedom from all inclinations of caprice.

His Preparation for Burial
Ima`m Abu` Ja'far al-Ba`qir undertook the preparation of the corpse of his father. He washed his pure body. The people saw the places of his prostration, which were like the knees of camels, out of his abundant prostration (in prayer) for Allah, the Exalted. They also saw his shoulders, which were like the knees of camels. Then they asked al-Ba`qir about this, and he replied: "He would put food into his bag, carried it on his shoulders, and divided the food among the poor and the deprived.(Haya`t al-Ima`m Mohammed al-Ba`qir, vol. 1, p. 54).
When al-Ba`qir had finished washing the corpse of his body, he shrouded it, and prayed over it with the written prayers.

Escorting him to his Final Resting Place
Great escorting was held for the Ima`m. Medina (Yathrib) had never witness such escorting before. This is because the righteous and the sinful escorted him. The masses surrounded the great coffin. They wept and lamented for the Ima`m in humbleness. They felt a heavy loss, for they lost immense good, and unique spirituality. When the Ima`m died, the tongues kept silent, and the intellects became perplexed. Hence the people of Medina crowded all around the Holy Corpse.

At his Final Resting Place
In the middle of a halo of exclaiming Allah is great and praising Him, the people brought the Holy Corpse to al-Baqi Cemetery. They dug a grave for him beside the grave of his pure uncle, Ima`m al-Hasan, the master of the youths of Paradise, and the plant of sweet basil of Allah's Apostle, may
Allah bless him and his family.
Then Ima`m al-Ba`qir, peace be on him, buried his father in his final resting place. With him he buried knowledge, kindness, reverential fear, spirituality of the prophets and of the Allah-fearing. After Ima`m al-Ba`qir had finished burying his father, the people hurried to him to condole him. The Ima`m, his brothers, and the other Ha`shimites, thanked them for their condolences.

Hadrat Abul Fazl Abbas(A.S.)

Hadrat Abul Fazl Abbas(A.S.)

the Standard Bearer of Imam Husayn (A.S.)
The shifting sand dunes of Karbala were smeared with blood. Near one of wash dunes, on the bank of Alkoma, lay the prostrate figure of a youth with blood gushing out from innumerable wounds. The crimson life-tide was ebbing fast. Even so, it seemed as if he was anxiously expecting somebody to come to him, to be near him before he breathed his last. Through his starched throat he was feebly calling somebody. Yes, Abbas was anxiously expecting his master to come to him before he parted with his life, as he had come to the side of all his devoted friends who had laid down their dear lives for him and in espousing his cause.
It is said that before a man's death al the past event of his life pass before his mind's eye in a flash-back. In his last moments Abbas was experiencing this. He was seeing himself as a child in Medina following Husain with a devotion which was considered unique even for a brother. He was seeing the events of that hot and sultry day in Kufa when his illustrious father Ali was addressing a congregation in the mosque and he, as a child, with his characteristic devotion, was looking at the face of his beloved brother watching him intently so that he could attend to his wishes on an instant command. Seeing from the parched lips of Husain that he was feeling extremely thirsty, how he had darted out from the mosque and returned with a tumbler full of cool, refreshing water and in the hurry to carry the water as quickly as possible to quench the consuming thirst of his dearest brother, how he had spilled water on his own clothes. He was recalling how this incident had made his illustrious father stop in the midst of his speech, with tears rolling down his cheeks at the sight of his young son all wet with water. He was remembering his father's reply to the queries from his faithful followers as to what had brought tears in his eyes, that Abbas who had wetted his body with water in the process of quenching Husain's thirst would in the not too distant future wet his body with his own blood in attempting to quench the thirst of his young children. He was vividly seeing the scene on the 21st Ramazan, way back in 40 Hijra, when his father mortally wounded, was lying on his death-bed and entrusting his children and dependents to the care of the his eldest brother, Hasan - all except him. Seeing that his father had commended all but him to the care of Hasan - how he, a child of 12, had burst out into uncontrollable tears. His father, on hearing him sobbing, had called him to his side and given his hand in Husain's hand with the words:
Husain, this child I am entrusting to you. He will represent me on the day of your supreme sacrifice and lay down his life in defending you and your dear ones, much as I would have done if alive on that day.
How his father had turned to him and affectionately told him:
Abbas, my child, I know your unbounded love for Husain. Though you are too young to be told about it, when that day dawns, consider no sacrifice too great for Husain and his children.
He saw before his mind's eye that parting with his aged mother Fatima in Medina. How she had affectionately embraced him and reminded him of the dying desire of his father to lay down his life in the defense of Husain and his dear ones.
A faint smile of satisfaction flickered for a brief moment on his parched lips a smile of satisfaction that he had fulfilled his father's wish; that he had performed his duty for which he was brought up. It just flitted for a moment and vanished as other scenes came before his mind's eye. He was re- living the events of the night before. He was seeing Shimr stealthily coming to him; and talking to him about his ties of relationship; about the protection he had been promised for Abbas by the Commander of Yazid's forces, only if he would leave Husain and go over to Yazid's camp; about the promises of riches and rewards that he would get; how he had spurned the suggestion of Shimr with the utmost disdain to the chagrin of that servile minion who had sold his soul for a mess of pottage. How he had scared away that coward by his scathing rage saying:
You worshipper of Mammon, do not think that Abbas will be lured by your tempting offer of power and pelf. If I die in fending my master, Husain, I shall consider myself the luckiest person. O coward, remember that valiants die but once. Nobody is born to live eternally. By betraying my master, you have betrayed the Prophet, whose religion you profess to follow. On the Day of Judgement you will be doomed to eternal perdition. I am ashamed to own any relationship with you. Had it not been for the fact that you have come here unarmed, I would have given you the chastisement you deserve for your impudence in asking me to become a turncoat.
How that wretch had scampered from there seeing him roaring like an enraged lion. The thought of that unpleasant interlude contracted his brows. Or was it the excruciating pain he was suffering on account of the deep gashes he had all over his body?
Yet another scene passed before Abbas's eyes - Sakina leading 42 children, each with a dry water-bag. The children were shouting as if in chorus
Thirst, consuming thirst, is killing us.
Sakina coming to him and putting her dry water-bag at his feet and saying to him:
O uncle, I know you will do something to get water for us. Even if you can bring one bag full of water, we can wet our parched throats.
He could see that thirst, aggravated by the scorching heat of the desert, was squeezing their young lives out of them. The sight of these youngsters had moved him more than any other soul-stirring events of that faithful day. How he had picked up the water-bag with assurance to Sakina that he would go and bring water - God Willing.
How he had taken Husain's permission and marched out of the camp with a sword in one hand, the flag in the other, and the bag on his shoulder, with the children following him in a group up to the outer perimeter of the camp. How Husain had repeatedly requested him to avoid fighting as much as possible and confine himself to the task of bringing water!
His thoughts switched over to the events that had preceded his fall from the horse. With the object of procuring water for his dear little Sakina, he had charged on the enemy who held the river banks. He had run through the enemy ranks like a knife through butter. Again this surging onslaught the cowards could not stand and had run helter-skelter shouting for protection. For a moment it seemed as if Ali, the Lion of God, had descended from heaven. In no time Abbas was near the rivulet. He had jumped down from the horse and bent to fill the water-bag. When it was filled to the brim, he had taken some water in his cupped hand to drink and satisfy his killing thirst. But, on second thoughts, he had thrown the water away. How could he drink water when Sakina and the children were still withering without it? How could he be so callous as to forget that his master Husain had not had a drop of water since the last three days. He had turned to his horse which had been let loose so that it could satisfy its thirst. The animal had been intently looking at its master as if to say:
I too am aware that, so long as our master and his children remain without water, our thirst cannot be quenched.
With the water-bag filled he had jumped into the saddle with one thought uppermost in his mind, to get the water to the anxiously waiting children as quickly as possible. Seeing him galloping towards the camp of Husain, the enemy had turned. Somebody had shouted from the enemy ranks that if Husain and his people got water, it would be difficult to fight them on the battlefield. Though it was an uneven fight, he fought them with valour which was so characteristic of his fathers Though he was thirsty and hungry, he charged on them and scattered them. The mercenaries of Yazid were running like lambs in a fold when charged by a lion. Seeing that a frontal assault on a man so brave was not possible, they had resorted to a barrage of arrows. When arrows were coming form all sides, Abbas had only one thought in his mind, how to protect the water-bag than his life. Seeing that Abbas was preoccupied with this thought, one treacherous foe, hiding behind a sand-dune, had rushed out and dealt a blow on his right hand and cut it off. In a flash Abbas had transferred his sword to his left hand and the standard he was bearing he had hugged to his chest. Now that the Lion of Ali was crippled, the foes had found courage to surround him. A blow from an enemy's sword severed his left arm. The odds were now mounting against him. He held the bag with his teeth and protected the flag with his chest pressed on the horse's back. Now the paramount thought in his mind was to reach the camp somehow or the other. A silent prayer had escaped his lips:
Merciful Allah, spare me long enough to fulfill my mission.
But that was not to be. An arrow had pierced the water-bag and water had started gushing out of it. Was it water that was flowing out of that bag or the hopes of Abbas? All his efforts had been in vain. After all Sakina's thirst would remain unsatisfied and all her hopes would be frustrated. The enemies who had made bold to surround him, now seeing his helpless condition, were now gathering thick round him. One of them came near him and struck mortal blow with an iron mace. He reeled over and fell from the horse.
He tossed on the burning sand with excruciating pain. He felt that life was fast ebbing out but his wish to see his master had remained unfulfilled. With one last effort, with all the strength that was left in him, he shouted:
O my master, do come to me before I die.
As it in answer to his prayers he felt some footsteps near him, Yes, his instinct told him that it was his lord. His one eye had been blinded by an arrow and the other filled with blood and so he could not see. But he felt his master kneeling down beside him, lifting his head and taking it into his lap. Not a word was said for a few seconds because both were choked with emotion. At last he heard Husain's voice, a half-sob, half-muffled cry:
Abbas, my brother, what have they done to you?
If Abbas could see, would he have recognized his master? With back bent and beard turned white and hoary, on hearing the parting cry of his beloved brother, Husain's plight was such that nobody could have recognized him - such was his transformation. Abbas was now feeling the loving touch of his master's hand. With effort he muttered:
You have come at last, my Master. I thought I was not destined to have a last farewell with you but, thank God, you are here.
With these words he put his head on the sand. Tenderly Husain lifted his head and again put it on his lap, inquiring why he had removed it from there.
My Master, replied Abbas, the thought that when you will be breathing your last, nobody will be there to put your head in a lap and to comfort you, makes me feel that it would be better if my head lies on the sand when I die, just as yours would be. Besides, I am your slave and you are my master. It is too much for me to put my head on your lap.
Husain burst into uncontrollable tears. The sight of his brother, whose name was to become a byword for devotion and unflinching faithfulness, laying down his dear life in his arms, was heart-rending.
Abbas was heard to whisper softly:
My master, I have some last wishes to express. When I was born, I had my first look at your face and it is my last desire that when I die, my gaze may be on it, too. My one eye is pierced by an arrow and the other is filled with blood. If you will clear the blood from my one eye, I'll be able to see you and fulfill my last dying desire. My second wish is that when I die you may not carry my body to the camp. I had promised to bring water to Sakina and, since I have failed in my attempt to bring her water, I cannot face her even in death. Besides, I know that the blows that you have received since morning have all but crushed you and carrying my body to the camp will be heart breaking work for you. And my third wish is that Sakina may not be brought here to see my plight. I know with what love and affection she was devoted to me. The sight of my dead body lying here will kill her.
Husain sobbingly promised him that he would carry out his last wishes added:
Abbas, I too have a wish to be fulfilled. Since childhood you have always called me master. For once at least call me brother with your dying breath.
The blood was cleared from the eye, one brother looked at the other with a longing lingering look. Abbas was heard to whisper:
My brother, my brother
and with these words he surrendered his soul to his Maker: Husain fell unconscious on the dead body of Abbas with a cry:
O Abbas, who is left to protect me and Sakina after you?
The flow of Furat became dark as winter and a murmur arose from the flowing water as if to protest against the killing of a thirsty water-bearer on its banks.
The Resting Place of Hadrat Abul Fazl Abbas(A.S.)
Abu al-Fadl Abbas, peace be upon him, was the brother of Imam Hasan (A.S.) and Imam Husayn (A.S.) and the standard-bearer of Imam Husayn (A.S.) in the Battle of Karbala. He is well known in history for his valour, loyalty and similarity to his father, the Lion of God, Ali b. Abi Talib(A.S.).
The grave of Abbas (A.S.) received similar attention as that of Imam Husayn (A.S.). In the year 1032 AH, the King Tahmaseb ordered the decoration of the grave's dome. He built a window on the 'darih' around the grave and organized the precinct. Other similar activities were done by other rulers.
As a matter of fact, Karbala contains, besides the grave of Imam Husayn (A.S.) and his brother, the grave of all the 72 martyrs of Karbala. They were buried in a mass grave which was then covered with soil to the ground level. This mass grave is at the foot of Imam Husayn's (A.S.) grave. In particular, besides Imam Husayn's grave are the graves of his two sons Ali Akbar and 6-month old Ali Asgher.

The night before the tenth Muharram‏

The night before the tenth Muharram

The night following the ninth day of Muharram presented a unique spectacle which has no parallel in the history of the world. A detailed description of the scene of that night in Karbala, requires at least a separate chapter. However, only a few important events of the dreadful night are briefly related here. Since his arrival at Karbala on the 2nd Muharram, the Holy Imam used to gather all those who had accompanied him from Makkah, and address them after every night prayer, advising them to leave him to his own fate and to return to their homes, giving them every assurance that the consequences of his journey would be quite a different one from what had been imagined by them to be.

The final shifting:

Imam Hussain (pbuh) had to offer the sacrifice which had been termed by God Himself as 'Zibh-e-Azeem' the Great Sacrifice (37:104-108). The purity of his body and the divinity of his soul were unquestionable, but those whom he had to offer along with himself in the way of the Lord, had to be of some purity worthy to be blessed with the martyrdom. There were the good and the bad ones, mixed up, in his camp but what he needed was only a pure and clean stuff to be presented to God along with himself. Many who had accompanied him with selfish intentions, had deserted him, and of those still left, the Holy Imam wanted to effect a final shifting so that only those who desired nothing but the pleasure of the Lord, might remain to accompany him in his resignation to the Divine will, to resist against the onslaught of the falsehood of the Devil. At last on the 9th Muharram, soon after the enemy's consent to wait till the following morning, the Holy Imam, after the 'Isha' or the night prayers summoned the remaining people and addressed them thus: I am most pleased with you. I know no companions more loyal or better than my companions and no household more reverent or pious than my household, so may God bless you for my sake because you have been good and cooperative. I do not think that the enemies will give us a day more than tomorrow.

"You are all free, my companions, members of my family, my sons, and my nephews - everyone - to leave without being liable to anything. I release you from the oath and excused you all and you may go free from my obligation. They (i.e. the enemy forces) have nothing against anyone except me. Do not feel guilty; the night is dark. Take advantage of the darkness of the night and depart, let each one of you take the hand of one of my household. Leave me to my fate and save yourselves. They will definitely not stop you."

At the end of his speech, the Holy Imam asked his brother Abbas to put out the lamp in the tent so that people may walk away in the darkness without being ashamed of being seen by him.

It is reported that as soon as the lamp was put out, all those who had accompanied the Holy Imam from Makkah in their vain hopes of making their own fortune, began to desert the Holy Imam (pbuh) in batches and when the lamp was again lit after a while, there were left only a few here and there, and those who remained constituted the Godly band of the Holy Seventy-Two (72) who stood fast by the Holy Imam (pbuh) in the battle for Truth to save the human race against its falling into the abyss of falsehood.

But these remaining Seventy-Two (72) people said unanimously, that such a thing was impossible. Oh son of the Prophet; What will we tell the people, shall we say that we have abandoned our chief and leader, the son of the daughter of our Prophet without lancing an arrow for him or stabbing with a spear for him or striking a sword for him; by God no, oh son of the Prophet we will not leave you until we die before you and let us share your fate with you for life after you is meaningless. What answer we will give to the Prophet on the Day of Resurrection? What will happen to loyalty, to humanity, to love and attachment? Their ardent responses and their words said on that occasion melt a heart of stone and are most moving.

Abbas the brave said: "Is one life worth enough to be sacrificed for someone like you? I wish that I were brought to life seventy (70) times to die seventy (70) times for your sake." Another says, "I would lay down a thousand (1000) lives for your sake if I had them."

Another companion Saad son of Abdullah Al-Hanafi who raised saying:

By God no, oh son of the Prophet we will never abandon you so, that God will know that we have kept our word to His Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) regarding you. And if I know that I would die for your sake and then live again then be burnt alive and sprinkled for your sake and that is done to me seventy (70) times. I will never leave you until I meet my destiny with you. And why would I not do this when I know that it is only one death and then I will get the everlasting reward?

And then the Imam changed the subject and told them about the events of the next day, informing them that they all would be killed. I tell you openly now that I will be mercilessly butchered. My Brother Abbas will lose both his hands and die on the banks of the river. My eighteen (18) year old son Ali Akbar will die by the lance pierced through his chest. And similarly, every one of my companions who will remain with me here, whether he be a relative or a friend of mine, will be rolling in his own blood and ultimately be slain. Only my son Ali (Imam Sajjad), who is sick, will survive to suffer the worst of tortures along with the people of my family. All of them receive it as great good news.

But the young thirteen (13) year old Qasim son of Imam Hassan (pbuh) wondered if he too would be one of them. He thought to himself, after all I am only a boy. Perhaps the Imam means that only the elderly would be martyred. I am just a minor. Therefore, he turned to the Imam and asked him: Will I be among those who will be killed?

The Imam says to him, "Qasim, first let me ask you a question. I will reply after you have answered me." "My nephew, tell me, how do you regard death and what do you think about getting killed?"

"It is sweeter to me than honey!" i.e., "I haven't a desire that should be dearer and sweeter to me!"

After getting this answer, the Imam said to him, "My nephew, you too will be killed. But your death will be different from that of others and (it will be) after you have faced a great ordeal." I tell you now, not even my baby son Ali Asgher will be spared; he will receive an arrow on his tiny neck in my own arms and pass away.

This small band of Godly souls, pure in their spirit and sincere in their desire to fight and fall in the way of the Lord. Spent the night in prayers, reciting the Holy Quran and rejoicing in the hope to drink the fast approaching cup of martyrdom the following morning. Everyone anxiously waited for the break of dawn, to lay down his life in the way of the Lord in supporting the cause of Truth. The ladies were preparing their young children to be sacrificed along with the Holy Imam in upholding the cause of the Lord. The noble mothers of the family of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) were busy advising their young sons to be steadfast in facing the might of the enemy in defense of the right, and to lay down their lives cheerfully and thus to drink the cup of martyrdom in the cause of the correct guidance of the Human Race.

Bibi Zainab said to her sons, "My sons, tomorrow there will be a battle. I cannot ask you to fight because you are young. But if anything happens to Imam Hussain (pbuh), while you are still alive, I will be filled with shame." Both the boys stood up and said: "Mother, we have the blood of Ali and Ja'far in our veins. Our Grandfathers were warriors whose fame will always be remembered. Do you think we can possibly shame them? Moreover we are the pupils of Uncle Abbas. Mother, unless you forbid us and stop us from fighting, we shall go to the battlefield and show the enemies of Islam how bravely the children of Islam can fight. All we want from you is a promise that you will never weep for us. Or souls will never rest in peace if you grieve for us after we are gone." Tears of joy and pride flowed down Zainab's eyes as she embraced her two boys.

When Imam Hussain (pbuh) was passing by Farwa's [the widow of Imam Hassan (pbuh)] tent he heard Qasim say to his mother, "Mother, tomorrow Uncle Abbas, Ali Akbar and I will defend Imam Hussain (pbuh). Mother, if I get killed please do not weep for me." Farwa replied, "My son although I dearly love you, I shall not weep for you. Nothing will make me prouder than to see my son give his life for Islam." When Imam Hussain (pbuh) heard this conversation he prayed to God to bless Qasim and Farwa.

Abbas the Brave, Guard the Camp:

Abbas the dauntless lion stayed beside Imam Hussain (pbuh) ever since they left Medina and was loved by all the members of the Imam's family. He was so devoted to Imam Hussain (pbuh), that when 'Shimr son of Zil Jawshan', the second-in-command of Yazid's army came towards Imam Hussain's camp and called out: "Where are my nephews, Abbas, Abdulla, Ja'far and Uthman?" Abbas (pbuh) refused to reply. It was only after Imam Hussain (pbuh) told him "Answer him, because, despite the fact that he is corrupt he is also one of your relatives" then Abbas asked Shimr what he wanted? Shimr replied: "O, my nephews, I have specially asked 'Ubayd Allah son of Ziyad' for the safety of you all. So why do you wish to kill yourselves with Hussain? Why do you not join the forces of the mighty Yazid?"

Abbas (pbuh) looked at him with contempt and retorted, "May God's wrath fall upon you and upon your proposition, O, enemy of God! How dare you counsel us to desert our Master, Imam Hussain (pbuh) and tie ourselves up with the corrupt and misguided Yazid?" Shimr turned round and went away angrily.

The camp of the Holy Imam (pbuh) contained the ladies and the children of the House of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). Apprehending a surprise attack from the enemy forces which consisted of people who had turned treacherous to the Holy Imam and his family, a ditch was dug around the camp and fire was lighted the whole night and Abbas the Brave, guarded the camp in a vigil the whole night walking around it with his sword in his hand mindful of the safety of the Holy Imam (pbuh) and the inmates of the camp, with a vigilant eye on the ranks of the enemy.

The night in the Yazidian Camp:

While the hungry and thirsty devotees of God in the Holy Imam's camp spent the night in prayers and the devotional supplicate services to God, the soldiers in the Yazidian ranks in the opposite camp spent the whole night in drinking, feasting and making merry in the hope of the promised rewards from Yazid in return for the destruction of the family of the Holy Prophet. God alone knows how many thousands of bowls of wine were emptied on that night. The Yazidian forces anxiously awaited the break of the dawn of the next day to affect the brutal slaughter of the Holy Imam and the small band of his kith and kin and faithful devotees.

Imam al-Husayn (A.S.) Martyr In The Way Of Truth‏

Imam al-Husayn (A.S.): Martyr In The Way Of Truth

Imam al-Husayn (A.S.) was a man of faith and action. During nights, he worshipped Allah in privacy while during the day he worked hard and guided the people. He was constantly mindful of the poor and the needy, and he used to visit them and cheer them up. He used to tell his followers:
"Be always in touch with the needy, for Allah does not love the arrogant."
Al-Imam al-Husayn (A.S.) always helped the poor as much as he could. at night he would carry sacks of food to the houses of the poor and leave them near the doors. He worked hard to eradicate poverty, establish justice and aquaint the people with Allah.
During the time of Imam Husayn(A.S.) a tyrant called Yazid became the ruler. Yazid called himself the successor of Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) but this was a lie. He used to spend the income of the Islamic realm on drinking, gambling and wild parties. Public wealth was wasted for supporting his regime and the rights of the poor were trampled upon. In this way he totally scorned the instructions of Islam.
When Yazid became ruler of the Muslims he immediately demanded Imam -Husayn (A.S.) to recognise him as the ruler and accept his leadership; but Imam Husayn (A.S.) was the true successor of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and could not accept and endorse the leadership of an oppressor. He began to enlighten and awaken the people about Yazid and exhorted them to dissociate from him. He would tell them:
"Do you not see that the truth is being trampled upon and the falsehood and oppression are prevailing? In such conditions, a Muslim must be ready for martyrdom in defence of the right. Martyrdom and self-sacrifice for the sake of truth is victory and success, while life with the oppressors is no more than shame and disgrace."
At that time the people of Kufa (Iraq) were loving followers of Imam Ali (A.S.) who had been suffering at the hands of Yazid and his father Mu'awiyah. They invited Imam Husayn (A.S.) to Kufa to lead them against Yazid and his wicked rule. Imam Husayn (A.S.) had indeed decided to rise up and fight, and so he accepted the invitation and set off for Kufa.
When the Imam Husain(A.S.) and his followers were near Kufa, they were met by Yazid's troops. The troops wanted to arrest Imam Husayn (A.S.) and his followers and take them to Yazid. The Imam (A.S.) told them:
"Never will I accept disgrace and surrender to Yazid, Death for me is superior to disgrace and I am ready to defend Islam and the Muslims until I am Martyred."
At a place called Karbala Imam Husayn (A.S.), his family and helpers were surrounded by Yazid's troops. The Imam (A.S.) and his followers stood firm as they fought against the thousands of troops of Yazid. Finally, on 10th Muharram, 61 AH (the day we call Ashura) they were martyred.
Imam Husayn (A.S.) and his followers were martyred, but they did not submit to injustice and oppression. They defended Islam and the Muslims. With their blood they saved Islam and the Qur'an from the danger of annihilation at the hands of Yazid. Imam Husayn (A.S.) fought against oppression and defended the religion of Islam, and by doing so, he taught the world the greatest lesson on freedom and righteousness. For this reason we call Imam Husayn (A.S.) "Sayyid al-Shuhada" which means "The Doyen of the Martyrs". Now the turn has come for us to safeguard and defend Islam. We must shoulder this magnificent resposibility.
Protecting Religion
The day of Ashura is a glorious day for truth and freedom. Ashura is a model for every day of our lives, and the martyrs of that day are the forerunners and teachers for all the martyrs in the way of truth.
One of the self sacrificing yound men of that day was called Wahab. He too gave his life for his Imam (A.S.) and for the true teachings of the Qur'an, and provided a lesson on martyrdom to all sincere youths of all times and places. Wahab was in his tent when his mother entered. She was obviously flustered and nervous; she said to her son:
"Wahab! what are you waiting for? Don't you know that Yazid's forces have surrounded your Imam (A.S.)? Rise and defend your Imam (A.S.). Rise and defend the Qur'an, freedom and honour. If you want me to be happy and pleased with you, rise and give your blood for the sake of your religion."
Wahab was already busy putting on his clothes and armour for the battlefield. He quickly finished and made his farewells to his mother and to his young wife. He ran to the battlefield with the permission of Imam Husayn (A.S.).
Wahab fought like a valiant lion and his sword fell on the heads of the enemy like lightening. But the day was hot and soon he became more thirsty and tired. He withdrew from the battle to rest for a while, and seeing his mother standing and watching the battle alongside one of the tents, he rushed to her side. She kissed the bleeding face of her son, and said:
"My son, I was watching you, but rest is not permissible. Our Imam's (A.S.) helpers are few; return to the battlefield and either defeat the enemy or be martyred in the presence of your Imam (A.S.). Only in this case I will be content with you and pray for you. Go now, my brave son."
With this encouragement, and after seeing his mother and wife, just once more for the last time, Wahab returned to the battlefield with an ardent desire for martyrdom. An enemy sword fell on his arm and wounded him. Watching from a far, his mother let out an involuntary groan. She picked up a stick and hurried to defend her son. Wahab's young wife also saw what had happened and she too rushed off to help him. She arrived at his side to find him lying, with blood spurting from his deep wound.
Wahab's wife wanted only to defend her husband and play her part in defending the religion. While taking care of her wounded husband, she too was attacked by the enemy troops and was martyred.
Defending Islam and the Qur'an is obligatory on both men and women. When necessary, Muslim women must learn shooting and other techniques of warfare. They must learn first aid and the art of nursing and attending on the injured. They are to be ever vigilant guardians of the Islamic homelands and honour.
In Iran, the brave Muslim women in Islamic Hijab (dress) followed the instructions of their great leader and took part in the demonstrations that freed the country. These freedom-loving women wearing their modest Islamic dress entered decisively into arena, and with the cry of Allahu Akbar on their lips they toppled down the imperial palace itself.
These Muslim women, following the instructions of Islam and observing Islamic Hijab in accordance with the Islamic teachings, cooperated with the men and delivered their country from the grip of traitors. Today, the Muslim women of Iran are playing an important role in all the organizations of the country.
These are the women who raised in the enviroment of Islam. Islam wants women to be veiled, to wear plain clothes in public, to keep their beauty and their adornments for their husbands and families, to avoid unnecessary contacts with men who are not "mahram" (with whom marriage is not permitted) and to maintain in this way their dignity and respect.
Allah tells us in the Qur'an that the believing women must not gaze at men who are not mahram and must hide from their bodies and hair. The women brought up in Islamic enviroment can grow spiritually and turn into brave defenders of Islam, the Qur'an, dignity and honour. They can play an impotant role in freeing and developing the great Islamic nation.

Bomb Blast In iraq

Bloody clashes between Israeli Army, Palestinian fighters continue

Updated at: 1312 PST, Sunday, January 04, 2009

GAZA: The bloody clashes between the Israeli Army and the Palestinian fighters continued unabated, while the rivals claiming to have inflicted heavy damages to each other.

On the other hand, United Nation Security Council once again failed to get pass through a condemnation resolution or on the issuance of a presidential statement.

Israeli Army after one-week of aerial bombardments last night launched ground offensive and intruded into Gaza Strip ignoring all appeals from the world community. Explosions thundered over the northern Gaza Strip on Sunday and smoke billowed into the sky as Israeli infantry backed by armour and helicopter gunships battled against Hamas fighters. At daybreak, from a vantage point on the Gaza border, massive and incessant artillery shelling and tank fire could be heard, and a huge plume of black smoke could be seen rising from one target that was being hit repeatedly. Israeli tanks continued pouring into Gaza on Sunday along with military ambulances as artillery shells rained down on the Palestinian territory. Troops were reported to be operating just three kilometres (nearly two miles) south of Gaza City, the main population centre of the densely populated enclave sandwiched between Israel and Egypt. It was at around 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on Saturday when infantry kitted with night-vision goggles trotted alongside tank columns across the northern and northeastern borders and into the Hamas stronghold. Hamas fighters fired mortar rounds and detonated roadside bombs as the Israelis advanced. Shortly after the ground offensive began, flames shot high into the night sky when warplanes bombed a gas depot near Beit Lahiya, causing a deafening blast. A huge fire raged at the depot, on a main road through Gaza, following the strike on the private business that sells cooking gas. Flares also streamed into the sky and exploded like fireworks, briefly lighting up the overcrowded territory. As the night wore on, witnesses said Israeli troops were approaching a built-up area in northwestern Gaza known as Sudaniyah, near the Mediterranean coast in northwestern Gaza. Separately, witnesses said soldiers had entered a neighbourhood of the northeastern town of Beit Hanun. Residents were being told by loudspeaker to evacuate the area, they said. The air force said it had hit 45 targets, including tunnels, weapons storage facilities, rocket launching squads and a number of mortar launching areas. Witnesses said that among the targets was the home of a senior Hamas official, which was destroyed without inflicting any casualties. The Israeli military said naval vessels had attacked a number of targets, including the Hamas intelligence headquarters in Gaza City, rocket-launching sites and Hamas marine forces outposts.

Israeli Army have claimed killing scores of Palestinians, but the exact number was not told.
